Ineke: BC Ferry Nostalgia

Ineke, Stoneware Jug

If you travelled by BC ferry in the 60’s and 70’s, you may recognize Ineke van’t Riet’s work.

Ineke’s pottery was commissioned by Victoria’s most popular souvenir and gift shops through the 60’s and 70’s; Mattick’s Farm in Cordova Bay, Victoria’s world-famous Butchart Gardens, and of course for gift shops on all BC Ferries.

She produced several styles of pottery featuring the BC Dogwood flower that were heavily featured at the Butchart Gardens and BC Ferry gift shops. She’s also remembered for small replicas of ferries and mugs with little chicks sculpted inside; items people remember receiving as children on family vacations, making her pottery sought-out and highly collectable today.

The stoneware pitcher we offer in our upcoming auction is a very fine example of her work. It features her popular BC dogwood motif in blue on a red clay vessel, the combination giving the vessel a timeless quality.
