Some of Spares finest grotesques in 'A Book of Automatic Drawing,' a work originally completed in 1925, but remained unpublished nearly 50 years, until the rediscovery of the manuscript in the early 1970s.
The Catalpa Press optimistically had 1000 sets of sheets printed to be bound in cloth spined boards, however, it's estimated that only 100 or so copies of the regular hardcover edition (and far fewer of the edition deluxe) were bound as intended. The publishers then had 300-400 sets of sheets bound up in paper wrappers. Spare's title for the book, as reproduced on the title page, was "A Book of Automatic Drawing," however this Catalpa edition has "A Book of Automatic Drawings" (plural) on the title label on the front board.
