Hamad Hassanzada was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1978. In 1987, after the outbreak of civil war, his family fled to Iran. He attended high school in Tehran as an Afghani refugee.
After high school, Hassanzada began drawing and painting. Despite not having enough money for formal education, Hassanzada found some drawing clubs and offered to be a live model in exchange for instruction.
However, soon Hassanzada found he needed to leave Tehran, when he came under threat of being outed as homosexual. With few options, returned to Kabul.
After seven years of living and working in Kabul, Hassanzada found himself fleeing again, this time from his own family, who had learned about his sexual orientation. This time he found himself in Istanbul Turkey, and registered for relocation to a 3rd country with the United Nations as an asylum seeker.
Hamed has been accepted as a refugee and has only recently arrived in Chicago. However, as a refugee, he is unable to move elsewhere and he is not allowed to work. The purchase of his art will help support him in these initial days. He plans to establish himself as an artist and eventually move to New York.
