At a young age, war and violence forced Ali Momeni's family to flee to Iran as refugees of the civil war. Momeni grew up in Tehran's refugee community; that alone was a source of great embarrassment. However, Momeni was also coming to grips with his homosexuality within the same community. His family was cultured and artistic, so refugee life was especially hard for them.

The situation would get worse as time went on, the pressure of family and relatives would force him to lie about his life. He lied on employment forms, stating he was married in avoid suspicion as to why a 34-year-old man was unmarried. He also lied to family and relatives to avoid questions about the most personal aspects of his life.

Eventually Momeni returned to Kabul. Putting his artistic skills to use in a design group and TV station. Today, Ali Momeni is currently living and working in Kabul, Afghanistan.
