HENNING is a Norwegian woodcarving company run by the Engelsen family, their workshop is situated in Kapp, in the eastern part of Norway.
Giving his name to his carvings, Henning Engelsen (1918-2005) was from the very beginning the creative force behind HENNING. Henning Engelsen had for many years shown great talent in fine arts and at some point worked as an illustrator. He later told that it was a coincidence that woodcarving got to his attention. But in 1947 in Rondane, a Nature Reservate in the middle of Norway, Henning carved his first pieces.

The workshop was built in 1950 by Henning Engelsen, two years after he founded HENNING. It was given a personal style and became a inspirational working place for Henning and his employees.
During the 1950's and 60's HENNING grew steadily and was at one point the leading enterprise on the Norwegian souvenir market, exported large scale to the US and had more than twenty employees.
Then. as now, HENNINGs handpainted woodcarvings - among them, trolls, vikings, animals, motives from folklore and everyday life – was a distinct addition and sequel to the tradition of Norwegian woodcarving.
Henning Engelsen found his inspiration in creating his own visual world both out of the mystical and supernatural Norwegian folklore as well as his everyday life at home; the people, animals and nature.
