Norma Barsness’ paintings transport us to a place where time stands still. Her compositions portray quiet time, yet powerful images of wind and movement can be seen. Her paintings are richly complex and filled with colour and peacefulness.

Barsness always knew she loved art. After raising their family in Calgary, she and her husband moved from Calgary to Birchcliff when they retired. Once she had time to pursue her interests, she turned to both painting and horses. She first picked up a paintbrush in 2003 and never looked back.

Barsness considers herself mostly self-taught, although she took a one-year foundation course at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary.

She paints scenes familiar to her and works to induce emotion and attain a particular aesthetic, rather than portray a specific place. The viewer is drawn in by her brilliant colors and bold brushstrokes, which define her signature style. Barsness favours an impressionistic approach to her subject painting light and shadow in a fresh and dramatic way.
