Gordon Smith, LG III 2006, chine colle and drypoint etching

CA$1,600.00

Gordon Smith
Canadian 1919-2020
LG III, 2006
chine colle and drypoint etching
edition 5/50

The Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art, in North Vancouver, opened its doors in 2012 to provide art enrichment opportunities for children and to ignite community engagement through exceptional Canadian Art curation and education.

Throughout his career, Gordon Smith believed in the value of supporting art education for youth. This dedication to the arts led Smith to mentor young artists including some of today’s most influential names in contemporary Canadian art. He found great satisfaction in uniting people through his art. Even throughout the last years of his life (when he was in his 80s and 90s) he still found time to mentor young artists and give painting lessons to children in his neighbourhood.

This piece was said to be inspired by a broken bicycle found under the Burrard Street Bridge, Vancouver.

Gordon Smith was born in 1919 in England and moved to Winnipeg with his family in 1933. He came to Vancouver in 1940, married Marion Fleming and joined the Canadian Army.

Returning from service overseas in 1945, he continued his art education at the Vancouver School of Art, then taught at the school for a decade. He joined the Faculty of Education at UBC and taught art until his retirement in 1982. The last 30 years of his artistic career were his most prolific.

As a master of colour, he explores the B.C. landscape in a fresh, expressive and aggressive style that is unparalleled by other artists. He was awarded the Order of Canada for his significant contribution to Canadian culture in 1996.

Gordon Smith passed away at age 101 in 2020.

Please note: This is a very large frame, 36” x 44.25”. There has been a repair to the bottom right, approximately 1/4” high x 1” wide filled chip; and to the left, small scratch approximately 1/2” wide.

Shipping of this piece will be additional. Delivery is possible through the Okanagan or Lower Mainland (on one of our scheduled trips).
