Washi Paper Framed Frowning Face, vintage Japanese polychrome handpainted kite sheet

Sale Price:CA$264.00 Original Price:CA$330.00
sale

Fantastic face painted on delicate washi paper originally for use as a kite. It is remarkable that this print exists as it was designed to fly high and ultimately tear or fall or be crushed. Sheets like this are usually glued to a bamboo frame with strings.

Kites have been a part of the culture in Noshiro, Japan, since the Tang Dynasty (ca 618 - 907 AD), in a coastal location where the winds are great.

This delicate piece of historical art is housed in a new metal frame that measures 24.5” x 19” and the paper is just about exactly this size as it is framed edge to edge.

The paper itself has been stored since the 1970s so we date it as at least 40-50 years old.

Listing is for one though we do have a pair, one smiling and one frowning kid.

Please contact us if you require shipping for an additional charge. We use Canada Post. Personal delivery is also available for a flat rate of $40 plus GST to the Okanagan and Lower Mainland during our scheduled trips.
